Ubuntu touch developer preview has finally been released for the Nexus 4 E960, Canonical is turn on words. It’s just a preview and not stable for everything but enough to experience Ubuntu. The preview lack a lot but has almost everything that a developer need, the Ubuntu Touch preview includes shell and core applications, connection to the GSM network, phone calls and SMS, Networking via Wifi, functional camera (front and back) and device accessible through the Android Developer Bridge tool (adb).
Some contents are populated with thumbnails currently, a browser, media apps, phone and SMS apps, and camera apps should be enough to experience Linux operating system on your Nexus 4. Canonical will hopefully release very stable version soon in near future.
This guide shows you how to install Ubuntu Touch Developer Preview for Nexus 4 E960. Your Nexus 4 will be wiped, so make a backup of your device data such as SMS, internet setting, contacts music files etc, you can sync your contacts with Gmail account and for messages use SMS apps, lastly use the carbon Android app to backup apps and data, though the APN setting automatically restored from network, it make mobile date work, but if it doesn’t happen to you, restore it manually, you can use APN app to do so.
Your Nexus 4 must have unlocked bootloader, check this guide to unlock bootloader. You need a Linux computer (Ubuntu is best), charge your battery, turn the USB Debugging on, to do so just tap Menu> Settings> Application> Development.

Instructions
Step #1: Set up the Ubuntu Touch Preview Tools PPA by adding the following custom source list entry to your/etc/apt/sources.list file.
Step #2: Open up terminal on computer.
Step #3: Issue following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:phablet-team/tools
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install phablet-tools android-tools-adb android-tools-fastboot
Step #5: Plug your Nexus 4 to PC.
Step #6: Now Issue following command to install Ubuntu Touch developer preview:
phablet-flash –b
Step #7: Once your phone is booted into Ubuntu Unity shell, you’re done.
